The Algiers Point Association’s 35th annual Home Tour will take place Saturday, October 18th and Sunday, October 19th, from 11am to 5pm each day. One of New Orleans’ most beautiful and historic neighborhoods – and, at 12 feet above sea level, one of its safest – Algiers Point’s wonderful homes are showcased in this annual event.

This year’s tour homes are all within an easy walk – one to five blocks – of the Algiers Ferry Landing, making it particularly easy for visitors to join us by coming across on the Canal Street Ferry.

Among the Algiers Point residents opening their homes this year are WDSU’s Norman Robinson and former State Representative Joe Toomy. Norman and Monica Robinson moved to the Point after losing their home in Hurricane Katrina. They bought a gorgeous Victorian home, a neighborhood classic. Joe and Joanne Toomey came from Gretna this year, renovating a penthouse condo with a magnificent view of downtown and the river.

This year’s tour homes exhibit a range of architectural styles as well as a range of renovation styles. One of the homes was rescued from demolition by Lee and Ken Friar, who created a gem from a blighted property. In different ways, the homes – and their owners – represent the unique character of this beautiful neighborhood.

Each home will be staffed by volunteers who can answer questions about the neighborhood and about the home. A map will be included in the brochure received at registration.

Before Saturday’s tour, Algiers Historical Society is hosting a seminar on “How to Research the History of Your Home.” It will take place at 10am at the Algiers Historical Museum at 225 Morgan, in the beautiful Carriage House behind the Algiers Courthouse.

Local restaurants and bars in the Point will be participating in the tour, and open both days. Old Point Bar will have live music starting at 5pm both days – Delfeayo Marsalis on Saturday and Some Like It Hot on Sunday – and will be screening the Saints game, as will Dry Dock Café and the Crown and Anchor Pub.

Take the bridge or the Canal Street Ferry, a fantastic five-minute ride from downtown and the French Quarter, which runs until midnight every night. The ferry departs the east bank at 15 and 45 minutes after each hour, and the west bank on the hour and half hour.

Tour tickets are $12 per day in advance, $15 on the day of the event. In advance, tickets can be purchased by calling (504) 322-7479, by mailing checks payable to “Algiers Point Association” to 305 Delaronde Street, New Orleans, LA 70114, or by visiting www.algierspoint.org.

During the tour, tickets can be purchased at Mount Olivet Episcopal Church at 530 Pelican Avenue, which will be hosting its annual Pasta Festival. On Sunday, they can also be purchased at Trinity Lutheran Church at 620 Eliza Street, which will be celebrating Oktoberfest 2008 with brats, sauerkraut, pretzels, German beer and more. The last tickets will be sold at 4pm.

This year’s tour is sponsored by Algiers Economic Development Foundation’s Westbank Business Showcase. Proceeds of the tour benefit non-profit organizations and efforts in Algiers Point.
