The
Algiers Point Association was founded in 1972 by a group of individuals
interested in preserving the integrity of its architecture and improving
the quality of life in the neighbhorhood. In the intervening years,
the APA, a 501(c)(4) [a not-for-profit social welfare organization],
has worked hard to implement and expand its original goals.
Through the efforts of the APA, the Algiers Point Historic Distric
was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The
area became a city Historic District in 1994.
The
annual Home & Garden Tour was one of the first neighborhood
sponsored tours in the city and continues to serve as a tool to
showcase and to instill pride in our community.
The 30th Anniversary Home Tour Poster shown here is available
at our online APA store for $5.00. Purchase it online now along
with other great products at our online
store.
The APA works to preserve the ferry service for pedestrian and
vehicular traffic. The Transportation Committee also deals with
bus and auto traffic flow concerns in the Point.
A walking tour brochure to market our historic neighborhood is
produced and distrubuted by the Marketing and Tourism Development
Committee.
Each month the APA hosts a Community Meeting. Meetings feature
guests speakers on various topics of interest, offer opportunities
to build camaraderie to other residents, and discuss committee agendas
and meeting dates. The meetings are held the first Thursday of each
month at Holy Name of Mary School's Cafeteria on Eliza Street at
7:00 p.m. and are open to the general public.
